Esraj is a combination between Saringda and Sitar. The base of the instrument is like Saringda while the neck and strings are like sitar. It gives a sound very much like Sarangi without being as difficult to play. The esraj is found in the east and central areas, particularly Bengal, India and Bangladesh.
The Esraj has medium sized sitar-like neck with heavy metal frets. This neck holds on a long wooden rack of 12-15 sympathetic strings. It has four main strings which are bowed. All strings are metal. The soundboard is a stretched piece of goatskin similar to what is found on a Sarangi.
A R Rahman has been one of the composers in India who has used the Esraj/Dilruba in his works like “Dil Se” and “Vande Mataram”
